We got up early today so we could get an early 6:30 a.m. start. Since it reached 93 yesterday we were concerned about the heat again today. It was a good concern and it did get up to 86 degrees before we finished the day.
Today consisted of 7 climbs which were hard just like Virginia. I thought we had left the hard climbs behind us but it looks like today and tomorrow will be the end of the major climbs on the eastern side of the ride. The profiles shown on the maps thru tomorrow have 1000’ increments. After tomorrow the map’s profile is shown at 100’ increments thus indicated less elevation changes. I will not complain.
The first rest stop was in Combs and since we arrived before the rest stop had arrived we stopped and ate breakfast at the Circle T Restaurant. The locals didn’t even give us a second thought so other riders had stopped there before. The waitress shirt said “I am only sarcastic when I speak”. I guess that is for the locals because we didn’t experience it.
The second rest stop was in Buckhorn and it was sent up before we arrive. It was adjacent to a convenience store which had good food and MILK SHAKES. I had to have one. That is one of the added benefits of the ride. We can eat all we want since we are burning up lots of calories.
The climb after the break was a hard one and it wasn’t because of the milk shake. There were a number of other climbs but the one just before Booneville was hard for me. One of the main reasons what the heat had found us.
We are camping tonight at the Booneville Presbyterian Church backyard. They have a cold water show and a Port-A-John. Life is good.
